ABOUT WRITING CLUB

Writing Club is a space for deeper work and accountability. Whether you are writing a series of essays, a newsletter, working on a book, or mind-mapping your way out of a rut, this is a place to show up week over week and commit to the writing you want to do. Writing can be a lonely and solo craft, which is why community and accountability are important along the way.

WHO WE ARE

This is a community of practitioners, experienced thinkers, professionals, and creatives. Almost everyone in this group has experience writing—newsletters, Substacks, blogs, essays, research, children’s books, literary journals, novels, and more.

Our core values in this community are ******depth, kindness, community, compassion, and courage.

HOW IT WORKS

Weekly gathering (on zoom). This is a space for 15-20 members to join a recurring weekly session where we sit together (virtually) and write. The ritual(s) are somewhat simple: We meet together once a week. Show up on time. Sign in and tell us what you’re working on. Butts in chairs. We write.

We’ll use the first ten minutes to ground, reflect, and get clear on what we’re doing. I’ll offer a short reflection and/or writing prompt to help you begin. You’ll share what you’re focused on.

From there, we write for 40-45 minutes.

For the last 10 minutes, we’ll put our pens down and share a snippet of our work in small groups (breakout rooms).

THE RITUALS

MONTHLY FOCUS. At the start of each month, I’ll ask you to write down your bigger goals and the kind(s) of writing that would feel really good for you to focus on. You’ll have access to this sheet, our group sheet, where we can learn more about what each member is working on.

ATTENDANCE ENCOURAGEMENT. Each time you join a session, you’ll get your attendance marked down. The goal is not perfection, but “imperfect consistency.” If you show up to 3 sessions a month, or if you still manage to carve out an hour of writing (even if you can’t quite sign in to the zoom call), that’s considered a win in our books.

ECHO REFLECTION. When we share our work at the end, you’re invited to reflect back words, sentences, or ideas that stand out to you—the good stuff. It’s an “echo” that we give back to the reader that says, keep going, this was good stuff.

SIMPLICITY OVER COMPLEXITY. This is a simple group. We will organize with a calendar invitation and a zoom link. Attendance will be tracked using Google Sheets. There isn’t a fancy portal, complicated zaps, extra steps, bells or whistles. We’re humans who want to focus on that pesky, slow, sometimes difficult, deeply rewarding craft of writing.

The goal of this is to write together and to encourage you to keep writing after we meet.
